This is really simple and cheap, and can even be free if you don’t mind not owning the URL (website address). The concept does not need to be about something you are interested in. Though if you are interested in it then it could be better if you are just getting started.

Your goal is to use a Search Engine Friendly blog, something like Wordpress or Blogger and then post relevant content to your target consumers. You put adverts on the page using various techniques such as recommending a product from Clickbank or Google Adsense. Then if one of your visitors clicks through then you will be paid by Adsense. If someone buys a product relating to your market from Clickbank or Commission Junction then you make money online.

Now you can make money without even owning the domain, but if you use a Domain registrar like Namecheap then the domain will cost under $10 per year. Another provider is Neverblue which is cheaper still and under $6. Your reason for owning the domain is every single domain is like a piece of real estate, once you own it then no one else does. You are effectively leasing the name for as long as you keep up the annual payments, during that time then no one else can.

Primarily go for .com, then .org, then .net. I tend to avoid hyphens where possible but depending on who you are listening to you’ll get a different story. Sometimes you can literally find a .com available in a high search keyword that is worth money from day one. Then once you get traffic to it, and you are on one of the main search engines front page then you are starting to create value. Selling your domains is actually an easy way to make money online. Think about it, all you have to do is send an email to all of the other people on page one saying, would you like to buy or hire my site? So you either get a one off high pay day, or recurring income.

So let’s say you go for something you are interested then go online and search for ‘Google Adword tool’. This is a free tool that allows you to find a relevant keyword for your niche. Don’t try and name your blog what you want, name it what the market wants. Just enter your keyword into the search box. Click on ‘Global Monthly Search Volume’ as this organises the searches into the most popular. Then find where it says ‘Match type’ and change it from ‘Broad’ to ‘Exact’. Then make sure to also add in the ‘Estimated Average CPC’. This will show you what other people are paying to have their ad show up for the keyword.

What you’ll now have is a number of choices for your domain name based on large ‘exact’ monthly search volume and high CPC price. So let’s say you want to run a blog as a ‘West Ham Supporter’. You may think you should call the site, West Ham Supporter.

So enter that in your search and you’ll see that only 480 people a month search on that ‘Exact’ term and it is worth £0.31 (changes all the time – but will always be around the same levels – just check to see if there are plenty of people paying to advertise on this term). But you’ll also see stacks of other suggestions from Google. One I found was West Ham Fans, which would be just as good a domain name, but it has 6,600 searches a month and is a little higher CPC at £0.34.

Now, this means that by choosing this keyword instead of your best guess then you have increased your traffic potential by nearly 14 times. This is why you should never choose a domain without searching it out first using Google Adwords.
